About Me

My name is Laina, and this blog is where I talk about the things I do to manage a healthy weight after losing 200 lbs through diet and exercise, and how I’ve been successful so far.  At the age of 25 I weighed 400 pounds, and over the course of 4 years I managed to lose 200+ pounds through diet and exercise alone. I’ve kept it off ever since through a combination of diet, exercise, constant vigilance, meticulous planning and sheer determination.  Maintaining a healthy weight is a job I’ll be doing for the rest of my life, so I need to pay attention to it every day.  This blog is a place where I can keep a record of the things that worked (and didn’t work) on this lifelong journey.

I’m not a professional nutritionist, I have a regular desk job like lots of people do. But I have  kept off 200 pounds since 2003, making me that extremely rare (some would say mythical) bird – somebody who has maintained a significant weight loss long-term.

I’ve been interviewed by Woman’s World magazine for a story about meal replacement (aka shake-based) diets.August of 2007 issue of Woman's World Magazine In addition to this blog, I’ve written many articles for for GetYourFitTogether, tackling health-related topics from a wide variety of angles.

I’ve been featured by the HMR program. I lost my last 100 pounds with HMR, and credit my participation in their maintenance program for giving me many of the tools I rely on to this day. Here is one of my HMR ads – Just another success story.

And finally, you may have heard me on Fit 4 Life Radio as a featured guest. I’ve also written as a guest blogger on many several weight management and weight loss sites.

Naturally I have strong opinions on the topic of weight loss and maintenance, and readers of this journal will be subjected to them on a regular basis. This is not because I think anybody must or should follow my advice – frequently it is simply a reminder to myself, as maintaining any kind of lifestyle change requires constant vigilance. It never gets easy, but it can become a habit.

So those are my credentials – I’ve been walking the walk and talking the talk for a heck of a long time.

Here are some pics of my journey – the first one taken in 1998 at close to my highest weight, then me when I first achieved my goal weight, and a pic of me today. I’m working hard every day at keeping off those 200 pounds.

Laina, I just posted this to FB but wanted to share here as well — what am amazing service you’re providing with this blog! It’s compelling, readable, inspiring and about so much more than losing weight. It’s about making the serious life decision to take care of yourself — and how to do it every day, despite the challenges presented by our consumption culture, unreliable metabolisms, willpower (or lack of) and busy lifestyles. You’re a great writer and have real insight into the many facets of dealing with weight issues, without being preachy or cloyingly cheerful. I’m really looking forward to what you write next. Thank you!

I just found your blog through Caron’s blog. You have such a motivating story. I have been trying to lose 90 lbs for a couple of years now. At one point I made it to 84 lbs and gained back about 35. I will get there and won’t give up!

Laina, I’m so glad that I found your blog. Your story is very inspiring to me. I also need to lose 200 pounds. I just started my blog and was searching on 200+ loser/bloggers and found you. It must be divine intervention! Your May posts about keeping from binging at the conference you attended, were also very inspiring. I deal with work-related food challenges a lot. I’m really looking forward to following you and I hope you’ll follow me too because I could really use the support.
