This morning I did my first kettlebell workout. I don’t actually own a kettlebell but you don’t need to. I used my regular 5-pound hand weight.
I popped in Jillian Michaels Shred It With Weights (she’s become my trainer of preference). Having already done both of her 30-Day Shred programs, I have to say I think that this workout is less intense. It may be because I was doing the 1st level workout, and learning how to use the weight like a kettlebell, but for almost every move that had a modification I was able to keep up with and do the advanced version. (Likely only because there weren’t any pushups at this level! The DVD preview window shows that this won’t be the case in the 2nd level…)
That being said, this is a great beginner-level workout, I think that if you are looking to start a workout program from scratch – ie, you haven’t done much and want to start – this would be a great place to start. It’s gentle and mostly low- or no- impact, but you’re still getting both strength training and cardio in the same moves. It does take a little coordination to not drop the weight in some of the swing moves, though. You can make it harder by using a heavier weight, which I may be doing next time.
Of course, it’s entirely possible that this workout is deceptive and I will wake up incredibly sore tomorrow. I’ll keep you posted. Regardless – I highly recommend this workout for anybody, beginner or advanced.
