Oh Toes!

Exactly 4 weeks ago today I noticed that one of my toenails was purple. It was the day I ran 6.2 miles for the first time. It didn’t particularly hurt, it was just reddish-purple. I left it alone and figured it would sort itself out like a good little minion. I’ve never had such a thing happen before, but like I said, it didn’t hurt.

Over the last month it hasn’t gotten any better, in fact it’s now black, the skin underneath it is a little black, and the nail is starting to have a bit of a grey sheen to it, not unlike a snake getting ready to shed. Still doesn’t hurt, and in the last month I’ve been able to continue running my little heart out – last weekend I posted my longest run ever, so obviously it’s not causing me any problems. Just…looks weird.

Today I finally got around to googling it and turns out a black toe is no big deal, fairly common for runners and ignoring it is exactly the right course of action. So that’s good news. I’m growing a “toenail in training” under there!

    Yes but wait until you 3-4 on each foot, during sandal season…my wife is so glad for all the new (dark) colored nail polish…lol.

      I would definitely paint them if I was going to wear open-toed shoes! I think if I had 3-4 of each foot I’d look into some different shoes?

        It is definitely a fit issue, but not always a simple fix…for instance we are ultra distance runners…things change during an 80 mile training run…sometimes…maybe your feet will swell, maybe not…maybe you have some wicked downhills, maybe not…maybe you encounter rocky terrain, maybe not…maybe you encounter creeks to run through, maybe not.

        After years of trial & error we have found running shoes with wide roomy toe boxes and narrow heel cups offer the best protection, but absolutely nothing is bomb-proof.

    I had a toenail almost entirely rip off — not due to running, but it was when I still ran, & of course, that accident stopped me from running a while bec. it hurt like hell. The nail healed eventually but now that same one just randomly goes black every so often. Like this past month! Further proof that the human body is weird.

    That is really interesting. I would have done the same thing as long as it was not hurting. Glad it is okay and nothing to worry about.

    When I got fitted for my running shoes, they put me in shoes that are a size and a half bigger than what I wear in everyday sizes… She specifically mentioned that it was to reduce the chances of the “dreaded” black toe/nail problem. 🙂
    So far, so good… but, I don’t log as many miles as you yet.

      As of trying to go to sleep last night, it appears that the same toe on my OTHER foot is trying to go black as well. I will be getting a new pair of running shoes this week…
