Quelling a Craving

I can’t shake a craving today for a piece of chocolate. Not a whole candy bar, not a piece of chocolate cake, just a simple square of chocolate – a bite would be enough!

Alas, there is no chocolate to be had in that form. I could go downstairs to the cafeteria and buy a candy bar, but that would be more than I want or need. I could go snag some from a candy bowl on a co-workers desk, but I hate to get into that habit. All I have on hand is a banana and a pear. They really aren’t going to cut it.

So I reached into my toolbox and came up with a go-to trick: Made myself a hot cup of tea. Hot fluids have a magical ability to settle down my stomach and remind it that it is not in need of anything further. I’m not hungry, I’m just having a craving. So a nice hot cup of tea it is. This works pretty well for me.

Sugar/candy is a steep, slippery slope for me. Last week, after 3 days of the thought of chocolate cake consuming me (it was actually distracting!), I gave in and bought 4 frozen gluten-free cupcakes. I thought I’d eat one and freeze the others. I didn’t. I ate all four of them over the weekend. With sugar/candy, once I have a little, it’s all over. It’s been almost a week now, and every day I’ve been struggling and mourning the thought of giving it up again! Eat a little and then I’m hooked. It’s like a drug. No, it’s not LIKE a drug – it IS a drug. I wish I’d thought to just drink some tea. I’m going to try that tonight if I get like I’ve been the last few days. Thanks for the tip!

I hope it works for you. Sometimes it works for me, sometimes I have to try more drastic measures. There are a couple of teas I like when that get close to what I need, Bigelow Vanilla Caramel is pretty good with some splenda and milk. There’s also a White Chocolate tea by Celestial Seasonings. Good luck!

I have found the mini-bars of very dark chocolate from Scharfenbergers works wonders for chocolate craving. I don’t even need the whole bar, just one section. I don’t know if that is something you would be willing to indulge, but it works for me. 🙂
